iPod Problems

So late last night I bought an album off the iTunes music store and hooked up my iPod to sync it across to listen to in the morning on the way to work. For no adequately explained reason it proceeded to hang transfering the first song, spinning beachball of death and all that. After pulling it out of the dock and manually resetting it I tried again, and iTunes informed me that I needed to do a hard reset in the iPod Update application. I tried that, and it gave me the beachball again. Now it refuses to even mount the iPod.

Oddly enough, it still plays music just fine, although anything that tries to write to it is just totally hosed. This will no doubt get more and more annoying as time goes on.

Anyone got any ideas before I cave and buy a new one?

  1. That sounds suspiciously like the problems I was having with mine. Turned out I had a bad hard drive, at least according to the guys at ipodmods.com.
Mine played music fine till I tried resetting it, thus deleting all the songs.
They salvaged the thing for $35.
Command-Tab recently posted a few pieces on iPod maintenance: http://www.command-tab.com/2006/03/31/fixing-a-frozen-ipod/ and http://www.command-tab.com/2006/04/05/really-testing-ipod-hard-drives/.

  2. It does sound like a bad disk... :-(
Maybe mount it as a drive and run some disk checks on it? (Disk Utility, maybe try rsyncing all the data to /tmp).

  4. Some other symptoms when I was having issues:
Using the iPod as a hard drive failed (as one would expect from a dying hard drive)
Running DiskWarrior didn't do any good.
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think DW would let me run a SMART test on the drive. Don't know if the iPod supports SMART, if it's a FireWire thing, if the drive was just that hosed, or if I'm mis-remembering.
Which iPod did you have again? The ipodmods guys told me that the 30Gig 3G iPod drives had a very high failure rate, to the point where they don't sell the drives any more. They offered to sell me either a 20 or 40 Gig replacement drive.

  5. This is a reasonably old 20 gig iPod, it predates the click-wheel models. Mounting it as a drive fails (it never even shows up on the desktop), so I'm likely going to take it to the Apple store and complain, or failing that send it in to that ipodmods place Eric mentioned.

  6. make sure the cables and/or dock are clean. sounds ridiculous, but that actually produced the same symptoms in my old 3g ipod. which is now behaving the same way again, but almost certainly due to the two years of my unremitting abuse catching up with it.

  10. It's been working well enough (i.e. still plays fine) that I haven't been motivated enough to go buy a new one yet. I may do so this weekend though, you never know...

  11. I am unable to listen to the songs that I download from iTunes as my ipod just scrolls past them until it comes to a song that I downloaded from a CD. Anyone know of remedies for this problem?

  12. Mine has conked after 10 months. It just either comes up with a battery (with a small ! next to it) or a folder icon with a small ! next to it. I tried the Ipod updater and it says that it can't mount up the Ipod. Its not funny 10 months for 220? It's a rip! Before I'm forced to hand over my hard earned cash again can anyone help or am I just another slave to Apple?
